Today i hollowed out a log and turned it into a tree swallow nest box.
I also made 4 PVC pipe nest boxes for tree swallows.
Im hoping to set them up tomorow

Duckings

Just home from nevils pond, i forgot to charge my camera so i olny got a coupple shots ! I did however meet another local birder.Its great getting to know more people with great photography skills and info !

A Day With Swallows

 I spent my whole day getting photos of the swallows.The pictures as you can see came out great !
They were active the whole day and were very tame.They were busy building nests, i would lay a feather on a stick and the male would come by snatch it up and go to the nest box !



   I will let the pictures speak for them selves ! Hope you enjoy!

The swallows would land on my hen house and get grass. (Im gald someone got to use it)

I also seen 5 common grackles !

Tree Swallow Nest Construction !

 Toady me and another local birder went to neviles pond to get a look at the tree swallows, Today was the first day of nest construction !
Earlier in the day there were more swallows but later in the evening with the wind picking up they deminished
Tomorow with the mild winds there should be a large number of swallows and i plan on getting some more action photos like the ones below !

Nevils Pond

Nevils pond or as ive been calling it in previous posts 1st pond is a great spot for birding.Ive seen many many species and theres always somthing happening !
Today i seen some swallows,osprey,warblers,chick a dees,sparows, and 2 mother ducks with ducklings !
There are lots of old big trees and LOTS of mice, I think it would be a great spot for owls ! Im going to keep look out !

The last day of may 24

 After being away from my local aera for a while and i knew the warm weather would bring birds.I went to nevils pond    (i awlways call it 1st pond)  and there was atleast 50-100 tree swallows.I seen lots of males but hardley any females.They were going in and out of my nest boxes and eating fly and playing, what more could i ask for !!

My mom wanted to go for a walk down to bowring park.I dident go with the intention of taking pictures but i brought my camera anyways.I was on the bridge watching the fish jump out of the water for the bread, when out of nowhere this tame crow landed about 3 feet away.I gave him a piece of bread and he went into the river,soaked the bread for easier swallowing.He keep coming back for more.So i got a quick photo before moving on.Im glad i did, its one of my favourites.

May 24

My may 24th weekend was going to be like any other, out looking for birds here in town or checking nest boxes or fishing. I knew it had to be one of them! That eveing we had lobsters !! MY FAVOURITE

I woke up about 7:30 on saturday morning (early for me) and my dad asked if i wanted to go on a little fishing trip to a pond where when he was younger he fished and even won the NL fishing contest 3 times !
I was all for going.Not olny for fishing, but the diffrent birds and animals in the deep woods. I should mention that it was FAR in the woods,(about 3 hours from town and then a 30min-40min drive in the woods to the camp.After getting a few buddies together we set off...
We got there and my main goal was to get some pictures of the grey jay or as some call the wiskey jack or canada jay ! I thru out bred and peanuts. From past times in the woods i know they love that kind of food.My dad asured me i would easily get my picture soon ehough.We went to the pond and started fishing, as you can see we couldent of asked for a better setting, the loons calling and the snipe willowing in the sky with a little trickel of a stream in the background.

After fishing for about 3 hours and and getting a few fish we headed back to the camp. I dident see any jays but i did see at least 30 wood pecker holes ! 

For supper we had prime rib stakes on a little BBQ and played cards now thats my kind of roughing it !

The next weekend we woke up to the sun shinning in the windows. Another crisp calm morning as you can see !

Up on the pond we had our breakfast, eggs,sauages, toast and tea !

The duck to the right is a hen goldeneye i think and it is in a pond i have a nest box set up in !

Trouting off to a great start !

Today was the First day of fishing season ! Me my dad and his friend set off out the the highway in the early morning to one of my dads "hunny holes" We went to 4 of these "hunny holes" and never got one bite. After driving the highway thinking of another place to go we seen a pond in the distance, a little grass nice shoreline...My kind of pond.So we decided to go and have a flick.As you can see...the flick payed off.

Here are some photos i took in long harbour on our way fishing.Just out side of fitsgeralds pond park i seen a goose off on the barrons alone.

I started my day with 1st pond. Heres some photos

 Afterwards i went and checked 2 owl nest boxes i have set up.There was a nest i think in one of the nest boxes but olny feathers in the other. The pictures speak for them selves

I finaly went and checked out the supposed kestrel nest. I  seen a starling come out of one hole and the other hole had no action.....ill keep the blog updated if i hear anything

While checking the kestrel nest i found a raven nest....they wernt pleased
